723 Referring to my Confidential Despatch of the
4th. December, 1912, I have the honour to report for your informa— -tion the subsequent course of events in the matter of extradition from this Colony to Canton.

The sum claimed by this Government as being
due from the former Imperial Administration was paid in December last. Approximately one-half of the money was owing to the firm of Messrs. Dennys and Bowley for services rendered when Mr. Bowley was Crown Solicitor.

With reference to the second paragraph of your 3446 Confidential Despatch of the 25th. November, 1910, it has been

arranged with the Canton Government that they will pay to this Government a monthly sum of 8500 in respect of the work performed on their behalf by the Crow Solicitor, and that they will in addition pay taxed costs in habeas corpus proceedings.

I enclose copies of correspondence regarding
two matters to which this Government has taken exception, namely the employment of private solicitors and the appointment of perma- -nent Chinese Officials in Hongkong for extradition purposes. The Chinese Authorities will no doubt reconsider the attitude which they have adopted with regard to these questions.
